Breast Cancer Surgery (MRM & Breast Conservation)

When a breast lump is confirmed cancer, surgery offers the best chance of cure. The aim is always the same: remove the disease completely, and save as much of the breast as is safe.

Understanding the Condition

Understanding breast cancer surgery

Breast cancer is treated by a combination of surgery, and often radiation and medicines. The surgeon's job is safe, complete removal of the tumour - either conserving the breast or removing it entirely where needed.

In breast-conserving surgery, only the tumour is removed with a clean margin and the breast is kept; it is usually followed by radiation. In a modified radical mastectomy the whole breast is removed with the under-arm lymph nodes.

Which operation is right depends on the size and position of the tumour, and your wishes. Many women fear the diagnosis more than the reality - modern recovery is far kinder than most people expect.

Types & Causes

The different forms

1

Breast conserving surgery (BCS)

Tumour removed, breast preserved - excellent for early, well-placed lumps.

2

Modified radical mastectomy

Whole breast plus lymph nodes removed - safest for larger or higher-risk disease.

3

Lymph node staging

The under-arm nodes are assessed through keyhole (sentinel node) surgery.

4

Onco-plastic closure

The surgeon reshapes the remaining tissue for the neatest possible result.

Symptoms & Warning Signs

How you know you have it

Typical symptoms

  • A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Skin dimpling, redness or a retracted nipple
  • A nipple discharge, especially blood-stained

When to seek help urgently

  • A lump that is growing rapidly with symptoms
An early small lump has the best outlook by far. Self-examination monthly and a clinic visit for any change can be lifesaving.
Diagnosis

How it is confirmed

01

Ultrasound + Mammogram

Imaging shows whether a lump looks suspicious enough to biopsy.

02

Core-Cut Biopsy

A definite tissue diagnosis - the foundation of the whole plan.

03

Axillary Staging

Under-arm lymph nodes are checked for spread.

04

Tumour Markers / Staging

If cancer is confirmed, the grade and stage decide the exact approach.
