Hydatid Cyst of the Lung
A hydatid cyst is a fluid-filled sac caused by a tapeworm that is common in livestock farming areas. In the lung it grows silently and can rupture dangerously - so removal is needed.
What a hydatid cyst is
The tapeworm echinococcus spreads from animals to humans; its larva settles in an organ and forms a water-clear cyst. In our region the lung is one of the most common sites.
These cysts grow slowly and quietly. Many are found by accident on a chest X-ray. If they grow large they press on the lung, and if they rupture they can cause allergic reactions, severe coughing and spread of the disease.
The safest cure is surgical removal of the entire intact cyst - never just draining it - followed by sealing (capitonage) of the cavity it left behind. When done properly, the lung recovers completely and recurrence drops to almost zero.
