A biopsy is the only way to know for sure what a lung nodule or mass really is. Through tiny keyhole cuts a targeted sample is taken with near-zero pain and you go home fast.
Why biopsy matters
Scans show shadows, but shadows can be infection, inflammation, TB or cancer - and all need different treatment. A biopsy gives tissue, and tissue gives certainty.
Many lung abnormalities are caught early and turn out to be harmless. But guessing is dangerous: treat a cancer as TB and it can grow beyond control; treat TB as cancer and a patient suffers needless fear. A definitive biopsy removes all the doubt.
The safest way to sample a lung nodule is often VATS - a small camera port and sampling under direct vision. Targeted nodes in the middle of the chest can also be sampled the same way.
The different forms
Lung nodule
A small spot on the scan that CT could not characterise - needs tissue to rule out early cancer.
Lung mass
A bigger lesion, where the type of cancer (if any) decides the whole treatment plan.
Suspected TB / infection
When sputum tests are negative but X-ray strongly suggests TB or fungus.
Mediastinal nodes
Enlarged lymph nodes deep in the chest that cannot be reached with a simple needle.
