GERD / Acid Reflux (Anti-Reflux Surgery)

When acid constantly rises into your throat and medicines no longer hold it, the root problem is a loose valve. Anti-reflux surgery tightens that valve in one keyhole procedure - and the heartburn goes for good.

Understanding the Condition

The real story behind heartburn

At the junction of food pipe and stomach sits a one-way valve. When it loosens, acid escapes upward - causing the burning, regurgitation and cough that wake you at night.

Lifestyle changes and tablets control symptoms, but they do not repair the valve. When medicines fail, wear out, or you wish to stop long-term tablets, the anti-reflux operation rebuilds the valve by wrapping the top of the stomach around the food pipe.

This is done by keyhole surgery with a very short stay. Most patients stop all acid medicines, sleep flat again, and need no more bottles of tablets.

Types & Causes

The different forms

1

Persistent heartburn

Burning that returns as soon as medicine is stopped or lowered.

2

Regurgitation

Acid and food rising at night into the mouth and throat.

3

Reflux cough / voice changes

Acid reaching the lungs and voice box - a sneaky cause of chronic cough.

4

Esophagitis / stricture

Damaged food-pipe lining after years of acid.

Symptoms & Warning Signs

How you know you have it

Typical symptoms

  • Burning behind the breastbone after meals
  • Acid taste rising, worse lying down
  • Coughing or choking at night
  • Hoarse voice and throat clearing

When to seek help urgently

  • Difficulty swallowing or food sticking
  • Vomiting blood
  • Severe chest pain mimicking a heart attack
Constant heartburn for years damages the food pipe lining. Surgery protects the pipe and removes the acid problem at the source.
Diagnosis

How it is confirmed

01

Endoscopy

Shows the valve, inflammation and any damage to the lining.

02

pH Monitoring

Measures the real acid rising out of the stomach - the proof of reflux.

03

Manometry

Checks the valve and food pipe pressure so the wrap is perfect.

04

Barium Swallow

Shows reflux during swallowing and any associated hiatal hernia.

Treatment & Procedures

The procedure Dr Ahmad Ali performs

Rebuilding the valve, not suppressing the symptoms - that is the difference surgery makes.

Keyhole

Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Procedure (Fundoplication)

  • What it is — The top of the stomach is gently wrapped around the food pipe through tiny cuts, rebuilding the one-way valve.
  • Eligibility — Medically uncontrolled reflux, regurgitation, or a wish to stop long-term tablets.
  • Stay — 1-2 days.
  • Recovery — Normal eating within weeks; most patients stop all acid medicines.
